Arcade EPE Trial
How does efficacy & crop safety compare between Boxer Gold, Arcade, Axial and Achieve when applied EPE in wheat.
Dumbleyung, WA, 2017
Summary
This trial was established near Dumbleyung, WesternAustralia to compare and demonstrate to the David Gray’s extended network theefficacy and crop safety of Boxer Gold, Arcade, Axial and Achieve in Wheat.
In this trial no crop effect was detected with any of theproducts, even at the 600 ml/Ha rate of Axial. The annual ryegrass (ARG) onsite tested positive for group A resistance which showed up in the results.Timing of application was perfect with 17 mm falling the day after spraying. The site, aided by a dry start post seeding had low levels of ARG with multiplegerminations coming through later in the season. Boxer Gold achieved a controlof 87% followed by both rates of Arcade scoring 79%. Axial and Achieveperformed poorly with control below 10% attributed to resistance to the GroupA.
Note:
- Arcade is not yet registered for use as an early post emergent application in wheat.
- Axial is not registered for use at 600mL/Ha. We are just demonstrating the crop safety.

Assessment Methods
Assessment Date: Assessment 21/06/2017 Pre-Spray weed counts 19/06/2017 Control and phyto rating 12/10/2017 Weed counts
Data Analysis
All data analysis in this report was conducted using Microsoft Excel. Simple means, analysis of variance and the student t-test were used to determine statistical significance using the least significant difference method with a 95% confidence interval.
Results
Pre-Spray Weed Counts
We counted the number of ARG in 10 x 0.25m2 quadrants per plot. The ARG ranged from 1 leaf to 4 leaf. Please see dropbox link at the end of the report with pre-spray photographs
Visual Control Rating (28 DAT)
At 28 DAT weed populations were very low & patchy hence plant counts would have been unrepresentative. Consequently plots were rated subjectively.
110 DAT Weed counts (% control vs untreated)
Due to the late/dry start, the normal assessment timings proved difficult and non-representative as the ARG germination was patchy. Hence we came back at 110 DAT when the ARG plants were more visible. We counted the total number of ARG plants in 10 metres of plot per treatment. We feel that this gave us a representative result of the level of final control achieved by each of the treatments.
Conclusion
Arcade and Boxer Gold performed brilliantly compared withthe alternatives. This trial demonstrates what can be expected when you can gettiming of application spot on. With growers sowing earlier than ever,pre-emergents are likely to lose activity before the last germination of ARG,especially in a dry start to a season when pre-emergents perform poorly aswhole and ARG germinations are later than normal.
An EPE application of Boxer Gold or Arcade is an effective strategy to improve ARG control over a longer period. Please see photographs in the appendix which show the level of control achieved.
