Wheat Radish Trial

May 26, 2020

How does efficacy & crop safety compare between various early post-emergent broadleaf herbicides, targeting 4-6 leaf wild radish & capeweed.

Dumbleyung, WA, 2017

Summary

This trial was established near Dumbleyung, Western Australia to compare and demonstrate to the extended David Gray network the efficacy and the crop safety between various early post-emergent broadleaf herbicides at ¾ label rates. Wild radish and capeweed being the target.

In this trial, the targeted wild radish and capeweed were susceptible and thus the end result showed very good final control across the board. Talinor and Velocity showed the most rapid brownout, followed very closely by Eliminar C and Howitzer with Tigrex and the Paradigm brew acting much slower. Due to spray timing and conditions (~90% cloud cover + late afternoon spray) we saw some radish regrowth in the Velocity plots.

Data Analysis

All data in this trial was analysed using the ARM software package. In 2018 David Gray’s AgroAdvantage will be using the ARM software package for trial planning, reporting and analysis.

Results

Wild Radish Brownout Ratings

Talinor, Velocity, Eliminar C and Howitzer browned out radish significantly quicker than Tigrex and the Paradigm brew. By 29 DAT and 42 DAT radish control across the board was very good with Talinor and the Paradigm brew numerically better than the rest. Both Talinor and Velocity are light sensitive but only Velocity showed adverse effects from poor application conditions – showing a small amount of regrowth. Hence the rating of 92.5% control vs 98% control with Talinor.

Capeweed Brownout Ratings

A very similar trend to the radish control with 42 DAT control numerically superior with the Talinor and Paradigm brew. Overall control across the board was very good.

Phytotoxicity Rating (28 DAT)

Very little to no phyto from Talinor, Velocity & Paradigm. Tigrex, Howitzer & Eliminar C displayed a similar level of crop bleaching from the diflufenican and picolinafen respectively. There seemed to be no long term crop vigour reduction in any of the treatments.

Conclusion

In this trial, overall control in this trial was excellent with all products achieving a score of above 90%. The major differences being displayed were the speed of brownout – products containing contact herbicides were superior initially with the systemic herbicides such as Tigrex and the Paradigm brew coming into their own later. Tigrex and Eliminar C were the best value for money with Eliminar C acting much faster. Followed by Howitzer which comes with the added benefit of three modes of action – key for resistance management in combination with group H rotation.

Note: A similar trial was conducted in Geraldton where larger radish was targeted. Size along with known resistance we saw superior performance from Velocity and Talinor.
